Cold Plunge & Sauna in Chicago: How to Choose a Bathhouse or Studio
How to choose between Chicago's traditional bathhouses, a day spa thermal suite, an outdoor beach sauna, private contrast suites, and wellness clubs, with what to check about walk-ins, age limits, and booking.
By PlungeSpots editorial · How we research · Updated
Chicago has a wide spread of formats: a bathhouse that has operated since 1906, thermal baths in a restored factory, a sauna on Oak Street Beach, private contrast suites, and wellness clubs where the plunge sits alongside training or spa services. Which one suits you depends on whether you want a long social visit or a short, private session.
This guide groups the Chicago venues in our directory by format and lists what to confirm before booking. It is not a ranking. We checked each venue's details against its own website on 9 October 2026; terms change, so confirm them with the operator.

Bathhouses and thermal baths
Chicago Bath House in Wicker Park is a traditional bathhouse operating since 1906, with walk-in day admission to the sauna and cold pool, plus platza, scrub, and massage services, tanning, a restaurant, and a bar. Robes, towels, and slippers are included with admission.
AIRE Ancient Baths Chicago occupies a restored 1902 factory in River West, with hot, warm, and cold or iced baths, an aromatherapy steam room, a dry sauna, a jet bath, a salt flotarium, and an outdoor bath. Bath experiences and massage rituals are reserved in advance.
The two work differently: one lists walk-in admission, the other advance reservations. Check which applies before you travel.
Day spa thermal suite
Kohler Waters Spa at Lincoln Park has a coed thermal suite with a sauna, eucalyptus steam room, cool plunge pool, and hydromassage pool, offered as complimentary amenities around spa services. Guests must be 16 or over; ask what booking gives you access to the thermal suite.
Outdoor beach sauna
Oak St. Sauna runs a sauna and cold plunge on Oak Street Beach, with 75-minute social sauna sessions of up to nine seats and two-hour private rentals for up to 10 people. Single sessions, multi-session packs, a 30-day pass, and a monthly membership are booked online. Being outdoors, it is worth checking the weather and bringing warm layers for afterwards.
Private contrast suites
SWTHZ Old Town, SWTHZ West Loop, and SWTHZ Lakeview run 60-minute sessions in private suites with an infrared sauna, cold plunge, and vitamin C shower; the Lakeview listing also mentions in-suite entertainment. Sessions are booked online, and the Old Town and West Loop listings offer intro sessions, drop-ins, packs, and memberships.
Contrast Hot + Cold on Milwaukee Avenue offers both a communal room with an infrared sauna and shared cold plunge and private rooms with their own infrared sauna, cold plunge, and shower, plus locker rooms. Single visits, packs, and monthly memberships are available; confirm whether you are booking the communal or a private room.
Private suites suit people who want to control their own timing or would rather not share. Ask whether help is available nearby during your session; our first-visit checklist covers the questions about supervision.
Wellness and training clubs
Eastend Wellness Club in Fulton Market offers contrast sessions that cycle between a Finnish sauna at 180–194°F and cold plunge pools at 40–55°F, plus infrared sauna, light, compression, and salt therapy. Drop-ins, packs, and memberships are available.
Defined Training Recovery Room sits inside Defined Training in Lakeview, with a traditional Finnish sauna and cold plunge for individuals or small groups of up to three. Recovery memberships are an add-on to a gym membership, and packs and single sessions are also sold.
BIÂN is a 35,000-square-foot private club whose locker rooms each have a cold plunge built into the steam room, with private infrared sauna sessions, a gym, fitness classes, spa massage, and medical services. Access is by membership application, so it is not a drop-in option.
Infrared studio with a cold shower
Perspire Sauna Studio - River North offers private infrared sauna suites with red light therapy and in-suite SNØ cold showers at 45°F, plus halotherapy. It lists a cold shower rather than a cold plunge, so it is an option if you want infrared heat with a cold rinse rather than full immersion.
Booking and what to bring
Chicago mixes walk-in admission with venues that are booking-first or membership-only, so check which model applies before you travel. If you visit regularly, compare a pack or membership with single sessions; our membership or drop-in guide explains what to check in the terms. For a first visit, our first-visit checklist covers the questions to ask, and what to bring to a sauna, bathhouse or cold plunge covers packing and swimwear rules. Venues here list both infrared and traditional Finnish heat; our traditional versus infrared guide explains the differences to ask about.
Cold water and heat are not suitable for everyone. If you have a health condition or any doubt, speak to a healthcare professional before booking.
How we compiled this guide
We list venues that offer sauna or cold plunge access to the public in Chicago and checked each one's facilities and booking model against its own website on 9 October 2026. We have not visited them, and inclusion is not an endorsement. Paid placements, if any, are labelled. Operators can suggest a correction. See our editorial policy.
